How Much Food Should I Have at My Wedding?

As you consider your wedding budget, you might be wondering about food. What food quantities should you allocate per person? And what are your guests expecting in terms of nibbles versus meals?

Before you worry, remember that you're always in control. You get to figure out how much food you want for your wedding based on your special day. For instance, if you're having a big wedding, you may estimate how much food makes sense for 200 or more guests. Or, if you're just having a small ceremony and intimate reception, you might be more inclined to figure out how to keep just a few loved ones happy and sated.

Below are some of our suggestions when it comes to figuring out the right balance of food for your wedding.

Hors D’Oeuvres & Appetizers

If you've ever been to a wedding, you know that there are a few moments when appetizers might be served. In some cases, guests are greeted with small plates before the ceremony begins. In other situations, appetizers and hors d'ouevres are saved for the reception.

First, figure out when you're going to serve your appetizers. Then, plan on having about six to eight appetizers like meatballs, duck confit or vegan spring rolls per person.

Main Entree & Sides

You'll only need one entree per person if you're doing individual meals, but the amount of food per person changes if you have a buffet. Work with your caterer so that all your guests will be able to choose their perfect lineup of dishes.

If you have many children coming to your wedding, you may be able to get away with less food on a buffet. However, if you're serving pre-made salads and plated entrees, you can expect to pay for one plate per individual over age 2. Usually, younger children aren't going to eat a major meal, so you can offer your tinier loved ones kids' menu portions and selections.

Dessert

Most weddings feature a beautiful cake that the couple cuts after dinner to kick off the reception. However, some couples order separate sheet cakes for the guests. Others choose dessert buffets so everyone can pick the sweets that most satisfy their tastes.

Look at your guest list. Generally, you'll be giving one piece of cake per person. If you have a buffet, expect people to taste test and pick two or three selections each.
